Ornamental wolf head design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing wolf head drawn in fine black linework and stippled dots, with the eyes, nose and ruff of fur built up from dense ornamental swirls. The face is decorated with mandala-like motifs, scrolls and a jewelled pendant at the neck. It is rendered in black ink on white with no shading in colour, and the design fills the frame symmetrically.

The silver came over the pass wrapped in a bread cloth, and Ilse Marrow nearly waved it through. Her hand was already lifting when the lamp caught the pendant's fine wire and threw a web of light across the booth. Nobody smuggled filigree like that. Nobody bothered, not with the duty so low and the work so slow. She lifted the cloth with two fingers anyway, the way her father had taught her to handle anything that might bite.

The old goldsmith watched her from the far side of the glass. Anselm Rauch had a thin face and thinner patience, and he said the wolf's eyes had cost him the most. Eleven winters, he said, on the ruff alone, every dot pricked in by hand so the animal would look like it was listening. The piece was for his granddaughter's wedding across the river. It had to cross tonight, before the bridge gate shut at midnight and the snow closed the road.
Ilse turned the pendant over under the lamp. On the back, beneath a scatter of tiny stamps, was a mark she knew from the bottom of her father's old tools: a small hooked R. She looked up. Anselm did not blink. Your father owed me a set of pliers, he said, and I never asked for the price of them. Consider this the change.
She stamped the papers without reading them twice. When she pushed the cloth back across the counter, she pressed his hand flat over the wolf so the silver was warm against his palm, and she watched the animal's stippled eyes catch the light as he walked out into the dark toward the bridge.
