Mrs Pengelly kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, and every July she took in the same sort of lodger: the sort who wanted the sea to themselves. The mermaid came in on the Tuesday tide, hair the colour of wet brick, and asked for the room with the view of the harbour wall. She paid in sea-glass. Nobody asked why.

Her friends came by the back way, which was the sea. A yellow fish with blue fins sat on the windowsill and talked without stopping about the price of barnacles, while a red crab who called himself the Chief Musician of the Lower Deep climbed the drainpipe to complain about the noise. Mrs Pengelly put a dish of pilchards on the step and left them to it.

The trouble started when a letter came from the lodger's father saying the new moon was the deadline and she had better be home by it. After that she sat on the harbour rocks every evening, tail in the shallows, combing out her hair and going nowhere at all. The crab said she was being soft. The fish said she was being brave, which he considered the same thing with better manners.

On the last night Mrs Pengelly found the room empty, the window open, and two pieces of sea-glass set on the pillow, one green and one clear. She kept the green one on the windowsill. Every August after, a red crab sat on the harbour wall and stared out at the water until the first boats came in.
