Each character has big glossy eyes, bold black outlines and soft shading, and the set includes a starfish, seal, octopus, sea turtle, clownfish, shark, seahorse, stingray, crab, dolphin, pufferfish and orca. The palette is bright and saturated, with orange, purple, red and yellow set against blue and green accents, and some figures have small sand or water splashes beneath them.

The rockpool had called a meeting about the seal again, which meant it was my turn to be sensible, and I hate being sensible. I puffed up to the size of a conker just thinking about it. Mabel the octopus was already flushed purple with her arms knotted round a bottle top, and the crab kept clacking his claws on the sand like a gavel nobody had asked him to pick up.

The trouble was the tern. Every low tide it perched on Gull Rock and shrieked that the tide was turning, which it was, every single time, so nobody believed it any more. Dilys the turtle had been out past the breakwater since Tuesday with a cracked shell and a letter from her grandmother tucked under one flipper, and nobody had seen her since.
So I went. I swam out past the lobster pots with the shark trailing behind me like a guilty conscience, both of us pretending we weren't frightened, and found her on the sand of the outer bay. Her shell was cracked but she was breathing, and the letter had gone soft with salt. The shark, to his credit, had brought a strip of kelp to make a sling. The little seahorse was waiting on the way back with his tail wound round a post, and he laughed when he saw the state of my spines.
We carried Dilys home on the next tide. The crab read the letter aloud to everyone, badly, and the stingray cried, which nobody mentioned. Back in my own hollow under the weed, I let myself deflate slowly, one spine at a time, and decided that being sensible was overrated and the tern could shout all it liked.
