Loose line sketch on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A person wearing a black sleeveless top and black trousers, with a black shoulder bag, is shown from the chest down with the face cropped out of frame. A small tattoo on the outer upper arm is drawn in loose, sketchy black linework with light shading. The plain pale wall and grey floor keep the focus on the tattoo and the black outfit.

The bloom you sent me in the spring has finally opened on the windowsill of the net loft, though it took the whole of March to make up its mind. Dad would have laughed at me fussing over it. He never bothered with anything that didn't pull its weight, but I watched that stem every morning before the tide turned, waiting for the petals to come loose from their fold.
The fleet came in short again on Tuesday. Eight boats out of twelve, and Callum Reese's Good Intent still hasn't been seen past the Skerries. The women on the quay stood in their coats without talking, the way they do, and I stood with them holding the chart I'd been drawing for the Harbour Board. Nobody asked me to draw anything. I just needed my hands busy.
I sketched the bloom in pencil that night with the lamp turned low, quick and rough, because the thing wouldn't sit still for careful work. Every line went wrong and I left them in. The shading is all smudge where my thumb dragged the lead. It looked more like a flare going up than a flower, to be honest, and I suppose that was the point.
Callum's boat came round the point at first light, one sail mended in grey canvas. I went down with the kettle and didn't say a word. Some mornings you just put the kettle on and let the water do the talking.
