Tiny fine-line crosses on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person holds a black leather handbag with a chain strap, wearing an olive top and black trousers, with a marble-print scarf tied to the bag. Small black fine-line marks sit on the right forearm near the wrist, including simple cross shapes, and tiny dots are visible on the left forearm. The photograph is well lit against a pale marble-effect background, with the tattoos occupying only a small part of the frame.

The chain came in first, folded in a freezer bag like something pulled out of a river. Bev Crane laid it on the bench under the lamp and counted eleven links that had opened and one that had gone entirely, its ring bent into a flat grin. The bag was black suede over leather, with a flap and a brass tab, and tied to the swivel ring was a scarf printed with grey marble veins, knotted twice in a way Bev knew from her mother's wardrobe: a knot meant to be undone quickly.

She kept the ledger in pencil, because ink bled through the carbon. Each job got a tag, each finished job got a small cross in the top corner, and every replaced link got a dot beside it. Her father had told her in her first week that a repair was a promise you could count. She opened the chain, slid in two new links of nickel silver, and closed them with pliers until the snap clicked. The scarf she washed by hand in cool water and laid flat on the radiator, where the marble darkened as it dried.
The owner came back on Thursday and didn't take off her coat. She turned the bag over, weighed the chain in her palm, then held the scarf up to the window. 'You didn't iron it,' she said. 'Silk dries better flat,' Bev said. The woman nodded, tied the scarf back on in the same double knot, quick and certain, and counted coins onto the counter one at a time.
After she had gone, Bev wrote the closing entry: one chain, two links, one scarf, paid. She drew the cross in the corner, then added a dot for the bent link she had kept in a drawer, in case anyone ever came back asking for the old one.
