Lotus and chakra symbols across back and shoulder

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo covers the upper back and shoulder, with a purple lotus pattern containing an Om symbol at the top and a blue lotus and a yellow lotus lower down, each with a chakra-style symbol at its centre. The linework is bold and clean, and the petals are shaded with soft gradients. Green leaves fill the gaps at the bottom, and the design is photographed against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Carrick planted her first lotus in Hollin Mere the spring the Ashby brothers drained the lower field. Nobody in Thornley thought a water flower could survive Lincolnshire clay, and for two summers they were right. Ruth carried buckets up from the spring anyway, and on each flat stone she laid at the water's edge she painted a small coloured circle, blue, yellow, then violet, one for each bed she meant to make.

Her son Eli came home from the rail works in 1961 with a council letter in his coat. The mere was to be filled and sold for bungalows. He stood on the bank and called the flowers a nonsense, and Ruth said nothing. She walked him out along the stepping stones to the middle bed and nudged a stone with her boot. Beneath it the roots had pushed through the clay and into the old brick drain that fed the field, and the water, which had been sluggish for thirty years, was running clear over the lip.

The surveyor came in October and found the drain working. He wrote three lines about the outflow and a fourth about the blooms, which he said were unusually large for the season. Eli kept the letter. He never learned the circles on the stones were meant as a map of where the roots should go, only that his mother had known the water would follow them.

On the last morning of that autumn the violet bed opened before anyone was up, and the first light hit the petals while the mist still lay on the mere. Eli, walking the bank with a spade he had no use for, stopped and took off his cap.
