Lotus, dragonflies and frog on a leg

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

The design shows a large pink lotus flower with a closed bud beside it, tall green reeds, and two blue dragonflies in flight. A small green frog sits on a lily pad at the lower right, with more pads and leaves at the base. The linework is clean and the colours are soft, with shading in pinks, greens and blues across the petals and leaves.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo had already waded halfway across the mere when Tom finally caught up, his wellies full of cold water and his net held out in front of him like a reluctant offering. "Leave the frog," she said without turning. "He's been sat on that pad since May, waiting for someone to notice him."

Tom had come to the estate pond for the newts, the way every boy in Haverley did every summer, but the lilies had got in the way. Nobody had cleared the mere since the old gardener died. The pink flowers opened each morning on the black water, the reeds leaned over them like gossips, and the dragonflies came and went with the sharp blue flicker of matches being struck.

"Why does he sit there?" Tom asked.

"Because the lily pad is the only thing in the whole pond that will hold his weight," she said. "Everything else sinks."

He watched the frog for a long time. It did nothing. Two dragonflies hung above the bud, hovering, then were gone. The bud that had not yet opened stayed closed beside the big flower, patient as a letter nobody had posted. At the end of the afternoon the frog hopped, quite neatly, onto the reed beside it. Tom wrote in his notebook: moved, not swum. Mrs Okonedo laughed and told him that was the most useful thing anyone had learned in that pond in forty years.
