Lotus flower pencil sketch design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch on tracing paper shows a lotus flower with layered, outlined petals and a spiral inside the central bud. A thin looping flourish rises from the top of the bud, and a few small dots sit below the flower. The linework is light and even, and the image is entirely greyscale.

Nobody at the reunion remembered Mrs Ashdown's pond, which surprised me more than the grey carpet or the sausage rolls. I stood by the sports hall doors with a paper cup of squash, reading names on lanyards, and waited for someone to mention the science block. Nobody did. Half of them had forgotten it existed.

I had not forgotten. In our last summer she gave the three of us in Set 3 a dried seed each, hard as a pebble, and told us to nick it with a file and sink it in a jam jar of pond water on the windowsill. Mine was the only one that opened. By July it had a pale stalk curling up out of the murk like a question mark, and by September it had broken the surface with a bud wrapped tight as a fist.
After the speeches I walked round the back of the building. The pond was gone, filled in under a car park with white bays painted across it. At the edge of the tarmac, though, a single green cup had pushed through a crack beside the bins, its petals opening in the drizzle as if the ground had never been concreted at all.
I photographed it, then went back inside and found Mr Pryce, the caretaker, still stacking chairs. He said the flower had been there since spring and he had never had the heart to pull it. I told him I had grown the first one. He shrugged, wiped his hands on his overalls, and said it had come back without us.
