Ornate scroll heart frame sketch with anchor
Hand · Black and grey · Flash
A hand holds a black pen and draws an ornate scrollwork design of acanthus leaves and flourishes framing a heart outlined with small dots. The linework is fine and detailed, shaded lightly in grey pencil tones, and the drawing fills most of the pale paper. A small black anchor tattoo sits on a finger at the left edge of the frame.

Mab Corrigan had drawn the frame three times before the showman was satisfied, and each time he said the leaves were too polite. 'Make them argue,' he said, tapping the sheet with a fingernail. 'A heart wants something fighting to hold it.'

So she drew acanthus the way her grandmother had taught her on the back of a chapel hymn sheet, curling each leaf over the last until the paper looked like weather. She left the middle bare. The dots went round the heart in a line like beads on a string, one for every year the fair had come to Dunmore Green, and there were forty-one of them when she finished.
The fair had a fortune-teller's tent, a bearded strongman who could not lift his own boots, and a stall where two brothers threw rings over bottles for a penny. Nobody knew what the empty heart was for. The showman said it was for a name, and when a name came he would fill it in with ink like a proper signwriter.
The name never came, because the showman sold the fair in the autumn and walked off down the A road with the caravans rattling behind him. Mab kept the drawing. Years later, with a shop of her own in Carlisle and a pen she trusted, she sat down to draw the heart again and found the middle still bare. She left it that way. Some frames are for whoever walks in next.
