Lotus flower with geometric triangles on ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower sits above a descending geometric figure of dotted lines and triangles, with a solid-shaded inverted triangle at its centre. The petals are outlined in fine single-needle linework and filled with circular construction lines. The tattoo is in black and grey on smooth skin along the side of the torso, with the composition running vertically.

Edda Pryce had been told the lens at Skerrow Point would never be finished, because nobody had ever drawn its petals true. She sat at the kitchen table with the dividers and the brass ruler while the wind worked at the shutters.

The old drawings were pinned above the stove, sheets of squared paper gone soft at the corners. Her father had sketched the lens as a flower, eight prisms opening like a bud at dawn, each one a circle cut into thirds and quarters so the light would bend out over the water. Below it he had drawn the lamp as an inverted triangle, its point aimed at the sea. He never finished the drawing. Edda measured the circles again, pencil marks dotted lightly because the ink bled on damp days.
On the night of the storm she climbed the iron stair with the last sheet folded inside her coat. The lamp was lit, the glass turning slowly on its bath of mercury, and she held the drawing up against the beam so the shadow of each petal fell across the rock below. The shadows matched. Eight petals, eight circles, one line running straight down from the lamp to the sea.
A fishing boat came round the point at half past three, steering by the flower and not by the rocks. Edda was down the stair before the keeper woke, and she left the drawing pinned beside the others, the ink still wet at its tip.
