Wildflower bouquet within a dotted triangle on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a bouquet of wildflowers with a large open poppy at the centre, surrounded by daisy-like blooms, a feathery grass stem and serrated leaves. The linework is fine and precise, with soft shading in the petals and some stippled texture. A dotted triangle frames the bouquet, with its point aligned to the stems at the bottom. The image is shown from behind, with the top of a person's head and a grey garment at the edges against a brick wall.

Dear Nell,

The poppy came up on the bank by the level crossing the week after you left, which I took as a sign the ground had got over your going before I had. It was the big orange kind that only opens for a morning, and by the time I'd fetched the flour sieve and the blotting paper it had dropped its petals on the wet cinders like someone had thrown down a handful of pennies. I pressed what was left of the head anyway. You'll laugh, but it came out papery and grey, the colour of an old hymn book, and I think it is the best thing I have ever made.
Mr Pargeter from the signal box says the daisies are a nuisance, and so is the ragwort, and so is the grass with the feathery heads that gets in everyone's eyes come August. I told him the grass was for the vase on the sideboard, and he looked at me as if I'd gone soft. I gathered the lot on Thursday: two poppies, a fistful of oxeye, the spiky ragwort you always pulled off the stalk, and a few serrated leaves from the hedge by the stile. I tied them with the green garden twine and laid the bunch on the kitchen table beside your old wooden set square with the chipped corner, and I traced a dotted frame round it in pencil so faint you'd miss it.
Ruth from the chapel asked what the shape was for. I said it was for keeping things in. She didn't understand, but you will. The point sits right where the twine is knotted, so everything that's left of the summer leans in towards the middle.
Write back and tell me what the city flowers look like. Bring me one, if they have any that aren't in a window box. Love, Gran
