Lotus mandala with dotted chain design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing on white paper shows a central lotus or mandala-style flower with fine radiating petals. Strings of dotted lines and small loops hang in a curve beneath it, with short tassel-like points along the edge. The work is monochrome with clean, even linework and dotted detail, and the sheet sits on wood chippings with two pencils at the right.

The drawing was folded into quarters and pushed under the lost property tray, between a dog lead and a single black glove. I unfolded it on the counter at ten past six, when the 5.52 had emptied onto the platform and the tea urn was still ticking. A lotus, pen-drawn, all fine radiating petals, and beneath it a curve of dotted lines hanging like bunting, each one ending in a small loop. Someone had taken real care. The lines did not wobble once.

I counted the loops because counting is the job. Eleven. Under the lamp the dots were not random; they were spaced like the stops on the Calder branch, which I know because I have stood on every one of them with a flask of cold coffee, waiting for connections that never came. Somebody had drawn the line I ride every morning and bent it into a flower.
Mr Okafor from the signal box came down for his bag and looked over my shoulder. "That's Hebden Bridge," he said, tapping the third loop, "and that's where the water tower was." He was right. We spent the next twenty minutes matching the others: the quarry siding, the halt with the broken bench, the level crossing where a cat once sat on the gate for a whole afternoon.
The owner never came back for it. At closing I pinned the drawing above the kettle, facing the platform, and left the twelfth loop empty, because I have not decided yet where the line ends.
