Floral crescent moon line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing of a crescent moon built from blossoms, buds, leaves and seed pods, with the flowers densely clustered along the left curve and the right edge tapering into a thin stem. A second, smaller pomegranate-like fruit sketch sits at the top edge of the sheet. The linework is fine and even in black ink on white paper, with no shading or colour, and a Pigma Micron 01 pen lies across the lower part of the image.

Edie had sewn the same crescent into the back cloth for eleven summers, and on the final night of the Marlowe and Sons Travelling Show she stood on the cart step with a mouthful of pins and watched the real one come up over the hedge. It was thinner than the painted one. Ren had wanted the wreath of blossom to curl further round, like a hand, but the canvas had only been wide enough for the bottom half, so the flowers crowded the left side and the right thinned to a single bare stem that ran off the edge of the cloth.

Nobody had bought tickets since Whitsun. The lion had gone to a farm near Ashford in April, and the strongman had taken work loading lorries at the depot. What remained was four old horses, two clowns who no longer spoke to each other, and a ringmaster called Silas who still put on his red coat each evening as though someone might arrive late.
Silas came out at dusk with the ledger under his arm and asked her to strike the backdrop before the lorry came. Edie said she would do it in the morning. She had spent the afternoon with a seam ripper, working the crescent loose stitch by stitch, the way she would lift a pressed flower out of a book. The paint had cracked where the blossoms folded, and the pomegranates at the top had faded to the colour of weak tea. She rolled it round a broom handle and carried it out past the horses.
At the field gate she unrolled the moon against the hawthorn, where the wind could get under it. Silas watched from the cart step without his coat. By the time the first lamp came on in the farmhouse, the real crescent had climbed clear of the hedge, and the painted one hung in front of it, blossom flattened against the dark. She left it there for the farmer to find, and the two moons sat in the hedge together until morning.
