Lotus mandala with dotted drape on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large lotus flower sits centred on the upper back, its petals outlined in solid black lines and filled with fine dot stippling that forms a mandala-like pattern. A dotted chain with small drop ornaments hangs from the base of the flower, ending in a single elongated drop above the lower back. The tattoo is rendered entirely in black ink and greys against pale skin, with a plain, slightly blurred background.

The snow had come early to Kharsang Pass, and Pema Dolkar was still stippling the lotus onto the lintel of the toll hut when the first mule train came up the switchbacks. She worked with a bamboo stylus dipped in soot and gum, placing one dot after another, because her uncle said a pattern made of dots would hold the eye through a long wait. Each petal took her an afternoon. The mandala at its heart took three days.

The traders paid in salt, in tea bricks and in news. A man from the high valleys wanted his daughter's name strung on a bead chain, so Pema threaded it for him, counting the drop ornaments aloud the way her mother had taught her: eleven small ones, then the long one that hung lowest, so the chain would finish above the hip of whoever wore it. Her uncle told her to keep the long drop for the one who carries the road down, because the rest of them only mark it.
In the spring thaw she packed a chain of her own into a leather pouch, twelve drops with the twelfth stretched out and black as the lotus. She meant to sell it in the lowland market to pay her brother's debt. At the last bend above the river she stopped, opened the pouch, and found she could not count past eleven without her thumb shaking.
She walked back up the switchbacks with the pouch empty. At the toll hut she hung the long drop on the nail beside the door, where the wind could find it, and the lotus on the lintel caught the morning light as if it had been waiting for her.
