Lotus with Om symbol on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey lotus flower sits centred on the upper back, with an Om symbol at its heart and a curling stem extending down from the base of the flower. The petals are built from fine outlines and stippled dots, with ornamental swirls and dotted accents around the design. The photograph is a monochrome close view of the back, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The guard at the mountain crossing holds your sketchbook up to the sodium light and turns it slowly, the way a jeweller turns a stone. Every page is a flower. He asks what they are for, and you tell him they are for nothing, that you draw them the way other people hum. He doesn't smile. He counts the dots under his thumb, lips moving, in a language you half remember from your grandmother's kitchen.

Her saying was that a lotus grows out of the mud and is never ashamed of where it started. She stippled her patterns onto linen with a bone-handled needle, one prick at a time, so the whole cloth turned silver-grey at dusk. You learned the rhythm before you learned to read. The guard now makes the same sound under his breath, a single closed note that seems to start somewhere under the ribs.
He turns to the last page, where the lotus sits with its stem curling off the edge of the paper like a fern unrolling. He traces the spiral with a finger that never quite touches the ink. This one goes somewhere, he says, and it isn't a question. You admit it does: down past the barrier, through two valleys, to a village where a woman is waiting with a tray of ink and a steady hand.
He stamps the page with a red circle, the kind that means nothing at all, and hands the book back. Outside the road bends and the first snow starts to fall. You open the sketchbook at the lotus and find that he has added, in soft pencil, one tiny dot at its centre. It is the smallest mark on the page, and somehow it holds the whole flower still.
