Lotus mandala with star and moon on forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A lotus mandala sits centre forearm, drawn in black outline with the word Psalms and the reference 48:3 written across its petals, and a small text line above it. Dotted lines hang from the flower with a yellow-filled star and a crescent moon at the base. Loose watercolour splashes in pink, purple and blue surround the design against the skin.

I went down this morning with the ledger and found the lilies had opened anyway, four white ones, as if nobody had told them about the flood.

Mr Pelling at the chemist's has promised to send the star charts from London by Tuesday's post, the ones with the dotted paths of the nightly meridian. I have been copying them onto the backs of the feed merchant's calendars because the good paper is for you. Each evening I draw the crescent moon in the margin where it hangs over the church tower, and the two pale stars beside it that Father says are only the lamps along the bank.
Mrs Cartwright came round with a jar of pickled onions and asked after you, and then, lowering her voice, whether it was true you had written that the mountains there were so high they kept snow even in August. I told her it was. She said God is known in the high places, and I said the psalm says he is known in her palaces for a refuge, and she gave me the look she keeps for children who read under the blankets.
I have set this letter beside the chart and the pressed lily. When the parcel comes, open it carefully. The brass star is from Grandmother's drawer, and the moon I traced from the saucer. Tell me which way the wind is blowing over there, and whether the stars are any closer.
