Purple linework tattoo of a botanical floral cluster with hatched leaves on the upper leg near the knee.

Purple floral cluster on a leg

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cluster of flowers and leaves is drawn in purple ink across the outer leg. The linework is fine and even, with hatching and small dots shading the leaves and petals. The design spreads diagonally from the top left to the lower right of the frame, against a plain bed sheet and dark fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink came from a stone jar of elderberries my aunt boiled down behind the bakehouse, and it never dried quite the colour she promised. Ruth said that was the wood's fault. Everything from Hollin Edge went a little purple in the end.

We walked up the lane before the frost with a folding stool and a tin of quills to draw the rhododendron where it spilled over the wall. Ruth worked the leaves first, one long hatch after another, the way you might comb a child's hair. Then the flower heads, a cluster at a time, each bloom a ring of petals with a dot at its heart for the stamens. 'You draw what the light does,' she said, 'not what the leaf is. The leaf will lie to you.'

The sawyer came up the track that afternoon with his measuring chain and a paper from the estate. He studied our sheet a long time, then the bushes, then the sheet again. He said the edge would be cleared by spring. I said nothing, because Ruth had already rolled the drawing and tucked it under her arm like a loaf.

By March the sheet was framed above the vestry font, and the estate men walked round the wall instead of through it. Ruth never asked for thanks. In May she carried a fresh jar of elderberry ink up the lane, sat on the stool, and began again on the leaves, which had come back a shade darker.
