Lotus ornament on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical lotus flower sits at the centre of the design, with layered petals and inner detailing, flanked by curling scrolls and a vertical drop ornament beneath. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with fine hatched shading inside the petals. The tattoo is centred on the upper back, with the subject shown from behind and the face not visible.

The ceiling rose in room seven has been painted so many times that the lotus at its centre has gone soft, every petal filled in with cream by someone's careless brush. You notice it first because the brass fitting beneath it, a lamp hook nobody has replaced since the war, swings a fraction whenever a tram passes along the front. You are the only guest who has ever bothered to look up.

Mrs Ashdown tells you the house was built for a sea captain's widow who wanted nothing in it that could not be wiped down. The scrolls either side of the rose were cut by a plasterer from Margate who charged by the curl, and she still resents that he had the nerve to make them match. Every spring she climbs the stepladder herself with a tin of cream and a sable brush, and every spring she leaves the drop until last, because it is the only part that needs a steady hand.
On the Thursday you leave, the rain stops at four and the light comes in sideways through the sash. You stand on the bed in your stockinged feet and trace the petals with one finger, counting the layers the way she taught you, outer to inner, until the hook stops swinging. Downstairs the kettle is already on. You can hear her humming something that is not quite a hymn, and you know without being told that she has already stripped the bed for the next guest.
