Luna moth tattoo on an upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A luna moth with outstretched wings and long trailing tails is drawn in black ink, with its wing panels built from fine dots and stippled shading. The outline is crisp, and the stippling gives the wings a soft, textured look. The design sits on the upper arm against a plain background, with the wearer's floral top and denim visible in the frame.

The lamp on the wheelhouse had been drawing moths since the lock at Keadby, and by the time the Dorothy cleared the second gate there were a dozen clinging to the glass, pale as lichen, their long tails hanging like wet ribbon. Ada counted the eyespots on the nearest one with her thumbnail against the pane. Four on the forewings, two on the hind. Her uncle Lew had taught her that, the same summer he taught her to splice rope and to hate the sound of a diesel that wouldn't turn over.

Lew was asleep in the stern cabin with his boots still on, and the buyer's letter lay folded on the chart table under the tin of Golden Syrup. A man in Hull wanted the barge for a floating café. He had written 'characterful' twice. Ada had read it aloud to the moths, which was foolish, but the river was flat and nobody could hear her. Luna moths had no mouths, Lew once told her. They lived about a week, and in that week they did not eat at all. They only flew, and found each other, and laid their eggs on leaves that would feed something else.

At first light she eased the throttle back and let the Dorothy drift into the reeds below Trent Falls. The moths had gone quiet on the glass, all but one. It walked down the wheelhouse rail to the brass ship's bell and opened its wings slowly, the way a shop pulls down its blind, and let the sun through the membrane. Ada opened the side hatch. The moth lifted, circled the mast once, and dropped onto the water, where the current turned it gently towards the sea. She watched until it was only a green fleck, then went below to wake her uncle and tell him she would take the letter to Hull herself.
