A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pond froze hard that December, and the Hallows farm lost its silver chain to it. Mother had kept the chain in a tin under the stairs, a band of little lotus flowers joined by dotted beads, and the morning after the first snow the tin lay open and empty. Father said the wind had taken it. Ada knew better, because the tracks ran down the field to the pond and stopped where the ice went grey and thin.

She went the next night with a lantern wrapped in her coat. The water-wife sat on the ice with her knees drawn up, combing weed through her fingers, and she did not look up. 'You have what belongs to my mother,' Ada said. 'Your mother asked for a warm winter,' said the water-wife, 'and the price is the same as always. Tell me one true thing for every link, and you may take it home.'

So Ada told her. She said the cows would not take to the new bull and the hens had stopped laying since Michaelmas. She said her father had cried once in the barn, when he thought the lamp was out. She said her brother could not swim and went to the edge of the pond every evening anyway, to watch the light come on in the kitchen window. The water-wife nodded at each one, and each link loosened from the ice and slid into Ada's palm, cold as a coin. At the last link Ada had nothing left, so she said the thing she had been keeping back: that she was frightened too.

The water-wife smiled and let the chain go. Ada carried it home and hung it on the iron pump in the yard. By morning the frost had grown along each lotus, and the petals had opened white, and they stayed that way until spring.
