Magnolia and dragonfly full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers the arm from shoulder to wrist with pink and purple magnolia blossoms, buds and a twisting brown branch. Dragonflies in blue, green and grey perch among the flowers, with several beetles near the lower part of the sleeve. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft blended greys in the background sky and vivid colour in the petals and leaves, shown from four angles.

Dear Tomasz,

The magnolia came up the stairwell on Tuesday in a bin bag, which is how Mrs Okafor on the fourth floor carries anything too big for the lift. It is a bare stick, a metre and a bit, with a root ball wrapped in newspaper from March. I have put it in the big pot by the balcony rail, where the wind off the car park can't get at it, and I have told the council man who came about the damp that it is my business and not his.
Every morning I count the buds. There were nine on Tuesday. By Friday there were six and a crumb of brown on the leaves, and I found the beetles, little armoured things the colour of old penny, working along the underside of the branch as if they had been sent. I picked them off with tweezers from your tackle box and dropped them in a jar of soapy water, and I felt terrible about it, the way you did when you were nine and drowned a wasp.
Then on Sunday the dragonflies came. Three of them, blue and green, flicking over the rail and settling on the twisting wood as if the branch had been waiting for them. They stayed until the sun went behind the flats opposite, their wings catching the last light, and one of them gripped the stem just where a pink bloom was starting to open.
I am not writing to tell you the tree is saved. I am writing because you asked whether anything here was still alive, and the answer is yes, eleven floors up, between the pigeons and the satellite dishes. Come and see it before the petals drop.
Love, Nadia
