Magnolia flowers on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two magnolia blossoms on a branch, with one open flower facing upward and a second bloom angled towards the lower arm. The petals are rendered with smooth grey shading and soft highlights, giving them a three-dimensional, realistic look. The composition wraps diagonally along the forearm against a plain skin background.

The magnolias had come up from Cornwall in a van that broke down outside Warwick, and now the crates sat stacked with their lids off, every bloom bruised at the edges and already beginning to open.

Her uncle used to say magnolias were older than bees, so they had no patience for being rushed. She sorted the stems by eye, dropping the browned ones into the bin and lifting out the two best: one cupped and pale, the other already thrown wide, as if it had decided the night was over and wanted the morning to hurry up.
At four a man in a paper hat came asking for stock for a hotel in Harborne. She told him the stock wasn't ready, which was true. He didn't argue. He looked at the branch in her hands, grey in the orange light, and said his mother had one just like it painted on a kitchen wall in Lisbon, and that he had never once seen it in colour.
She wrapped the branch in damp newspaper and carried it to the cold room herself. Under the strip light the petals looked as though they had been drawn in pencil and then breathed on. She left it there, out of the wind. By morning, when the bay filled with vans and shouting, the open bloom had turned its face towards the door.
