Neo-traditional style peony tattoo with green leaves and black outlines on the forearm, with a script banner partly visible above.

Peony and leaves on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large peony bloom with layered, outlined petals sits on the outer forearm, with its stem and several green leaves extending down the arm. The petals are shaded in soft beige and pink, and the leaves use olive-green tones with darker red-brown edging. A partly visible script banner reading dark and deep sits at the top of the frame, set against a blurred background.

Dear Ada,

The peony came up through the leaf litter at the edge of Harrow Wood the week after the first frost, a fortnight early and the colour of weak tea. Don't tell me it's the cold. Mr Pell's boy saw it too, and he has never told a lie in his life, only a few sweet ones about his mother's bramble jam.

Mrs Quarry planted the root under the oak the spring her husband failed to come home from the hill farms, and she used to say the bloom opened only for someone in the village who had something they could not say aloud. Nobody believed her. Everybody walks the long way round that clearing now.

Last night I took the spade out myself. The hollow smelled of wet iron and the petals were folded tight, layered like pages someone had written and thought better of sending. Under the roots, wrapped in oilcloth, I found a tin. Inside were the letters I wrote you the summer you went to Bristol, every one of them, still sealed. I had burned them, or I had told myself I had.

So I am sending this one instead, and the tin is going back in the ground where it belongs. Come home before the leaves turn. The flower is still open, and I think it has been waiting for you to read the rest.

Yours, Nell
