Mandala and line tattoo on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large geometric mandala sits on the upper forearm near the elbow, built from dotwork stippling and clean fine linework. A thin tapering line runs down the forearm to the wrist, where a stacked chevron shape appears, and continues across the palm to a second chevron. The image uses only black and grey ink against a dark background, with the arm lit evenly and centred in the frame.

Dear Tom,

The rain has not let up since Tuesday and the market on Coldharbour Row has turned to mud and sodden paper. I'm writing under the awning of Hendry's old fish stall, which he left me when his knees gave out, with the brass tray of compasses steaming in front of me. You'd laugh at how I've become the one who knows which needle points where.

Yesterday a man came with a folded sheet of vellum under his coat, still dry as anything, and asked me to make the thing he'd drawn. A ring of petals with a star at its heart, then one fine line running out from the centre like a bowsprit, and two chevrons at the end pointing the way a boat would sail. He said his grandfather had cut the same mark into a ship's timber so that whoever stood on the deck would always know which way the harbour lay. I told him ink fades and paper rots, but a line could be hammered true. So I hammered one.

He came back at dusk and I set the needle into a leather cuff with a little brass star beneath it, the chevrons stamped where the north should be. He didn't pay in coin. He left a pressed sprig of rosemary and said the line was the only straight thing he'd found since the war, and he meant to keep it straight until he got home.

I've put the rosemary in the tin with your letters. Come home when the rain stops, and bring the chart you promised me.

Love, Nell
