Black and grey forearm sleeve with swallow and bell
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm covered in black and grey tattoos, including a cluster of crystals, a heart with a triangle, a bell, crossed nails with the words THE END, a swallow in flight and a Venn diagram. The linework is bold and clean, with solid black fills and grey shading on the crystals and bell. The arm is photographed against a dark slatted background, with the subjects spread along the forearm.

The bell at Carrow cracked the winter my mother died, and the Duke sent for me because I was the only founder left who could read a mould backwards.

I worked three days in the yard with the furnace roaring and one swallow circling the rafters. It should have gone south weeks earlier, but it stayed, the way creatures do when they sense a debt is owed. The tin came down from the north mines packed with salt-teeth, clear crystals the miners pried loose and tossed into the crucible for luck. When I pressed my thumb to the wax, I found the iron pins my mother had driven through the cope, each bent into a small cross so she could find the seam in the dark.
Under the lip of the mould, scratched small, she had written THE END. I asked the steward what it meant. He said it was the name the Duke had given the bell's last hour, the one it would ring when the kingdom's debts were paid. I laughed, and then I stopped, because he was not laughing and the old clapper was already hanging from its beam, black and heavy as a sleeping animal.
I poured the metal with a heart-shaped sliver of quartz set in its shoulder and a triangle of crystal in its throat. I sanded the words away with my thumb before the bronze could take them. When the bell was hung and finally struck, it gave one clean note, and the swallow, which had waited all week, flew out through the open door into the frost.
