Mandala and rose sleeve on the upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a large sleeve tattoo covering the upper arm of a person whose face is not shown. A rose with leaves sits at the top of the shoulder, above a layered mandala style flower built from dense stippled dotwork shading. Below, finer single line patterns of scrolls and geometric shapes continue down toward the elbow, all in black ink and grey tones against a dark background.

When the snow shut the high road above Carrow Hollow, the innkeeper's widow, Maud Tennant, had three guests and one candle to spare. The guests were a tinker with a cart of mended pans, a schoolmaster who would not stop coughing, and a woman who said nothing at all and drew every evening in a small leather book with a silver pencil.

The woman kept drawing the same flower. It had a rose at its heart, the petals folded into rings, and around the rings came circles of dots so fine they looked like frost on a window. Maud asked what it was for. "A way of keeping still," the woman said. "Each dot is one breath I didn't spend worrying." Maud thought that a strange thing to say about a picture, but she brought her more candles all the same.
On the ninth night the wind dropped. The tinker carried the book to the window and held it up to the moon, and the dots caught the light like seed in a furrow. By morning the woman had gone, the path to the pass was already dug out by the shepherds, and the book lay open on the kitchen table. On the last page, down the margin, ran a line of scrolls leading toward the hearth, and under them, in careful script, one word: stay.
Maud did not know what the word meant, so she kept the inn open through the thaw and every winter after. Each year, when the first hard frost came, she hung a copper lantern in the window, pierced all over with tiny holes, so that the light fell across the floorboards in rings.
