Floral mandala sleeve on upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large sleeve tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, centred on a mandala-style flower with a rose at the top and leaves filling the gaps. The design is built from fine linework and dense dotwork shading that creates soft grey tones and texture. The image is in black and grey and shows the arm in profile against a plain black background.

Dear Tom,

The rain has not stopped since you left on Monday, and the pit wheel has been silent for three days, so I have had time to finish the pattern you asked for. Mrs Hobday's sleeve, the one with the roses. I drew it out on squared paper at the kitchen table while Dad slept off the night shift, and I put in every dot you said to, though I will confess I wanted to put in more.
The thing about a mandala, the old lacemaker told me once, is that it starts at the centre and you work outward so nothing gets lost. I have tried to do that with the letter. Start with the rose at the top, big and stubborn like Mam's, then the petals opening like a lamp, then all the little rings of stippling that take a week of evenings each. Rita at the chapel says it looks like the pithead lamps caught in a frost, which is unkind, but she is not wrong about the grey.
You will laugh at me, but I have pinned the drawing above the range where the coal dust cannot reach it. When the men come up black and quiet, I look at it and count the dots the way Nan counted stitches. Four hundred and twelve in the centre ring alone. Come home by Saturday and I will show you the rest, and you can tell me whether the leaves go on the left or the right of the shoulder, because I have changed my mind twice.
Your loving, Annie
