Mandala and star tattoos on hip and thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on a wooden floor wearing black and white lace underwear, showing tattoos across the lower abdomen, hip and thigh. A large ornamental mandala with flower forms and swirling linework spreads across the lower abdomen and upper thigh, while a separate cluster of outlined stars and curling scrolls sits on the side of the hip. The tattoos are shaded in black and grey with no colour ink, and the image is shot from above with soft, even lighting.

The cage stuck at the sixty-fathom mark on the Friday before the strike, and my brother Davy came up the shaft with his lamp still burning, swearing at the dark as if it owed him money. Mam had the kettle on before his boots touched the boards. Nobody in Halden Row ever went down without a flask in their pocket.

I had been drawing the chapel window since I was seven, the round one above the altar with its petals of coloured glass that the bombs never reached. Mr Askew, the lamp-room man, taught me to set a compass point and turn it slowly so the petals came out even. I did it on the back of the rent book while Mam counted coppers, and by the time the kettle boiled I had a rose of eight rings with a star hidden in every third petal.
Davy wanted the sky. He said the three bright ones above the wheel were the only way he found his way home in the black, so I drew them with five points each and curled the smoke off the spoil heap into scrolls beside them. He laughed and said the smoke had never looked so pretty, and asked whether I'd put him in the picture. I told him he was the stubborn bit in the middle.
On the Sunday we walked up to the top field, where the wind comes straight off the sea and nothing stands between you and the sky. Davy held the drawing against the dusk and ran his thumb around the rings until he found the first star inside the petals. "Right," he said, "now we know where we are." Then the lights came on down the row, one at a time, and we followed them home.
