Compass rose design drawing

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a compass rose with eight radiating lines, four long petal-shaped points and four smaller points between them, all centred on concentric circles. Stylised looping letters mark the north, east, south and west points. The fine brown linework is monochrome on a pale, slightly textured paper background, with faint dotted guide lines visible around the circles.

Master Pellow sat at the far end of the drafting table with the lamp drawn close, squinting at the vellum as if the lines might rearrange themselves if he waited long enough. "The circles first," he said. "Then the points. Never the letters until the points are true."

She pricked the guide dots around the inner ring with the bone compass, the way he had taught her, and felt the old cold seep up from the window glass. Outside, the harbour wall was white with frost and the gulls had gone quiet. Somewhere below, a boy was hauling coal up the steps and cursing the weather in Cornish.

When the eight long points were inked, Pellow leaned over and tapped the blank space beside the east. "Letters," he said, and pushed the pen towards her. She had watched him loop the N and the S a hundred times, the tails curling back on themselves like rope coiled on a deck. Her first attempt sprawled. Her second held. The third she made without thinking, a small swirl at the top that was nothing like his and nothing like anything the chart needed.

"Who taught you that?" he asked.

She did not know. She looked at the mark for a long time. Then he laughed, a dry sound like paper tearing, and said the sea would not mind, so long as the north was still north.
