Mandala forearm sleeve in black ink
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dense mandala of flowers and leaves fills the forearm, with a large central rosette that tapers toward the wrist. The linework is fine and the shading is built from stippled dots and solid black areas. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the arm is photographed against a plain white textured wall.

Dear Tomas,

The customs man at Dover turned every page of the sketchbook I was carrying, and when he reached the drawing of the rosette he held it up to the strip light for a long time, as if the lines might come off on his fingers. I told him it was a map of a garden that doesn't exist yet. He didn't laugh. He just stamped the form and waved me through, and I stood in the car park with my hands shaking more than they had any right to.
You'll remember the shop in Lewes where Mrs Adeyemi kept the cuttings from her mother's allotment pressed between glass. I have been carrying that picture around for eleven years, the way you'd carry a stone in a pocket. Every petal of it is a decision somebody made with a needle, one dot at a time, and the dots are what I kept thinking about on the ferry. Stippling is slow. You cannot hurry a shadow into being. You have to let the skin take its own time to settle into the black.
So here is what I want you to do when you get this. Go to the chest of drawers in the back bedroom, the one with the drawer that sticks. Under the lining paper you will find my old tracing of the leaf pattern, the one with the coffee ring on the corner. Bring it to the studio on Tuesday and ask for Ruth. Tell her it's for the forearm, the one with room enough for the whole flower to open toward the wrist.
I'll write again from the other side of the water. Keep the kettle warm.
Lena
