Black and grey dotwork and blackwork mandala tattoo wrapping the inner upper arm towards the elbow, against a white textured wall.

Mandala tattoo on the inner upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala design made of layered petals, concentric rings and scalloped shapes runs diagonally along the inner upper arm towards the elbow. The motifs are built from fine outlines filled with dense stippled dots and solid black areas that fade into grey, giving depth. Small dots trail off at both ends of the design, and the pale wall behind keeps the black ink in clear contrast.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, love, the rain won't reach under this awning, and the story wants a wet market around it. You see those tin lids hung in rows on Mrs Okonedo's stall? Her grandmother punched every one of them by hand in the old lanes behind the fish hall. A nail, a hammer, a steady wrist. She used to say a single rose took ten thousand taps, and each tap had to be made by someone who was not in a hurry.

One autumn a fishmonger's boy called Tomasz came asking for a lid for his mother's birthday. He wanted petals in rings, and dots that faded from black at the centre to grey at the rim, so the tin would look like a sea lit from underneath. The grandmother took his coins and said nothing for three days. Then the rain set in for a week, the lanterns on Fish Row went out one by one, and she worked through every wet night with a candle wedged beside the tin. Her eyes were failing, so the dots grew finer and closer, until they blurred into shadow where the petals curled.

On the Saturday, Tomasz carried the lid home wrapped in a bread sack. His mother turned it in the grey light and found the tiniest dots at the very edge, where the petals stopped. She asked why they were so faint there. He didn't know, so he brought the question back to the stall, and the old woman only laughed. That was where her eyes had given up, she said, but her hands hadn't.
