Mandala octopus on the side ribs

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large octopus tattoo wraps across the side of the torso, with its tentacles curling outward and ending in dotted spiral tips. The body and limbs are filled with detailed mandala-like floral and petal motifs, with soft grey shading that fades toward the edges. The tattoo is black and grey and fills most of the frame against a blurred indoor background.

Your grandfather's orchard runs down to the Medway in rows so straight they look ruled, and by the last week of August the Bramleys have dropped into the long grass faster than you can gather them. You are on your knees between the trees with a wicker trug when the grass beside the water starts to move the wrong way, against the slope, in a slow coil that ends in a spiral of dark dots pressed into the mud as if someone had counted them on purpose.

Mrs Pargeter from the cottage said the old octopus came up the river every summer when the fruit was ripe, and nobody believed her, least of all your grandfather, who said the only things that came up that river were eels and council letters. You had laughed. Now the creature lifts a long arm over the bank, pale underneath and patterned across its skin with rosettes and petals that bloom and fade as the light moves through the leaves. It tips a windfall into the palm of one tentacle with the care of a clerk checking a ledger.

It does not want the fallen ones. It wants the greengage you have not picked, the small hard fruit hanging above the water where nobody thought to reach. You climb out along the bough and hand it down, and the creature turns the plum over, its dots tightening into a curl at the tip of its arm, then sets it on the bank like a payment.

Walking back up through the rows that evening, you find your trug full again, every apple rinsed clean and shining, and a single spiral of dots printed on the gatepost in wet mud, where the river has been waiting for you to come home.
