Colourful octopus tentacles across shoulder and back
Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large octopus tattoo wraps from the upper arm over the shoulder blade and across the upper back, with curling tentacles covered in rendered suckers. The shading is soft and painterly, with pink, purple, teal and orange ink blending into the skin tones. The composition fills the frame from the left edge toward the centre, with a white top and black bra strap visible at the bottom.

You climb the iron stair at dusk with the paraffin can knocking against your shin, and find the lamp room already wet. The sea has not come up the rock this time. Something has been dragging itself over the gallery rail. Long pink arms hang over the brass, their undersides ringed with suckers the size of pennies, and the whole room smells of weed and cold copper.

Nobody on the mainland will believe you. The relief boat's skipper laughs when you mention it and says the squid off the Skerries are big enough to frighten a dog and no more. But every night since the storm you have found the gallery streaked with teal and violet slime, and every night the lamp has been turned a quarter round on its bearing, so the beam sweeps wider over the Cormorant Bank where the Ellen Duff went down.
Tonight you stand still and let it coil around your wrist. Its skin shifts through orange, then bruise purple, then the green of shallow water under sun. It does not pull. It guides your hand to the brass winding handle and waits, suckers tightening, until you understand it wants the light turned slow, the way the old keepers did when a fishing fleet was still out past the bank.
You wind the clockwork. Out in the dark a small red sail lifts, tacks, and steers for the gap in the rocks. When you look back the rail is empty except for a ring of suckers printed in salt on the glass, each one catching the beam as it turns.
