Mandala-patterned baby elephant tattoo

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A chubby cartoon elephant with large round eyes sits in a pose with its trunk raised, filling most of the frame. Its body and ears are covered in intricate mandala and henna-style patterns, including dots, scallops, zigzags and rosettes. The bold outline is solid black with fine detail inside, and the design is shown in a close-up photograph on skin.

It had been a gift from a dhow captain at Muscat, a chubby thing of painted clay with a pattern on every inch of its hide: dots in rings, scallops like the edge of a lace collar, rosettes on its flanks. The men said it was only a toy. Anwen said a toy that the cloves liked was not a toy, so she gave it the end of the spice shelf where the cardamom was kept, and the air stayed sweet about it.

When the squall came off the Horn that winter, the hull groaned, the pots slid across the deck, and the men below began to pray in three languages at once. Anwen did not pray. She set her palm to the elephant's raised trunk, as she had done for twenty years, and told it plainly that the ship would not go down while there was bread in the oven. Then she counted the dots on its brow, the way her mother had counted stitches, and found the number had changed. There were seven now where there had been six.

The Halcyon Mary limped into Falmouth with her sails in rags and every man aboard alive. Nobody could say who had added the seventh dot. Anwen never painted anything, and the elephant, when she held it up to the lamplight, only lifted its trunk as if the question were beneath it.
