Ornate mandala elephant on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single elephant facing the camera, its head, trunk and legs filled with intricate geometric patterns and rosette motifs. The design is outlined in fine black linework with dense patterned shading. The image is a close, straight-on photo of the arm against a pale background, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame.

Dear Ruth, the rains have finally stopped, so I am writing from the porch while the mud drains off the lane. You will laugh, but the elephant came back again last night. Not the real one, the one Mr Okonkwo carved for the church fête years ago, the one with all those little circles cut into its ears. I heard it at the edge of the orchard, tearing up the fence posts the way it did when we were girls, and I went out in my nightdress with the lamp.

It was standing between the pear trees with its head held high, and every panel of it was covered in patterns, rosettes and stars and diamonds like the lace on your mother's good tablecloth. I thought it would charge. Instead it lowered its trunk and waited, quite patiently, the way Father used to wait for the kettle. So I did what he always told me to do and I asked it what it wanted. It touched the lamp with the very tip of its trunk and then turned round and walked back into the woods, slowly, so I could follow.

I did not follow far. I stopped at the stile where the path bends, and when I looked back the orchard was empty and the fence was mended. There was a small rosette of pressed mud on the gate latch, neat as a stamp. I have left the lamp lit on the step. If the elephant wants to come and go, I suppose it may, so long as it leaves the pears alone. Come up at the weekend and bring your old sketchbook. I think you should draw it before it changes its mind about staying put.

All my love, Edie
