Mandala tattoo across the shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular mandala fills the shoulder and upper arm, built from layered scalloped rings, petal shapes and a central floral medallion. Each petal has a heart motif and fine linework, while stippled dotwork shading gives the outer rings depth and tone. The image is shown in black and grey ink against pale skin, with the woman's back and auburn hair framing the design.

The windfalls had been lying in the long grass since Tuesday, and by Friday the wasps had found every split one. Nell knelt at the foot of the old Blenheim with a bucket and a stick, while her grandfather watched from the gate and said nothing about the blisters on her palms. She had the first ring down already: twelve Bramleys set in a circle, each one turned so its bruise faced the same way.

Her gran had drawn these in the orchard dust every September, a wheel of scallops with a flower at the centre, and she called them stills, though nobody had ever explained the word. Nell's were less careful. The petals kept coming out lopsided. She pressed the cores into the earth to make hearts, and the juice ran down her wrists and dried sticky under the cuffs of her jumper, though it was still warm as June.
By four o'clock the second ring was finished, and the wasps had moved from the fruit onto the rim of the bucket. Grandad came up the slope with his cap in his hand and stopped at the edge of the design without stepping on it. He looked for a long time. Then he took the stick from her and, very carefully, drew one more petal, its tip curling inwards like a closed hand.
That evening a shower came over from the Malverns and rinsed the dust away. In the morning there were only the cores, pale in the wet grass, and one petal still holding its shape against the wall of the press house, where the rain had not reached.
