Floral mandala tattoo on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large floral design fills the upper arm and reaches onto the shoulder, centred on a layered flower with a star-like bloom. Fine linework outlines the petals and leaves, while dotwork stippling creates shading in the middle of the bloom. Soft red and pink wash appears on some leaves and petals, set against black ink and grey tones on a dark background.

Sit down by the wall, you lot, and mind the barrow. My grandmother kept the walled garden at Hollin Mere when the big house still had a family in it, and she had one rule: never cut the star. Out past the glasshouse, in the middle of the sundial bed, there was a bloom with a centre like a little sky, pale points set in rings of petals, every one dotted by a hand that had patience. Nobody knew who planted it. The gardeners called it the Stranger.

The winter the frost came early, the old steward, Mr Abernethy, decided it was a weed and took his spade to it. My grandmother stood in the path with her arms folded. She said the Stranger had been there longer than the steward's name had been in the ledger, and it would bloom again if left alone. He told her she was soft. She told him the roots went deeper than the bed.
Come spring, the leaves that had been cut came back red at their tips, the colour of a robin's breast, and the petals opened in a ring around the cut stump as though nothing had happened. Abernethy never touched the bed again. He took to sitting on the bench beside it with his hat in his lap, and by midsummer he was the one telling the children the rule.
So when you go home tonight, and you see something in your own yard that you did not plant, leave it be. That's all the ledger there is.
