Mandala tattoo on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala design fills the lower forearm, built from concentric rings of petals, stars and geometric lattice. The linework is fine and the pattern is built up with stippled dots and short strokes, giving soft shading within the sharp outlines. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against pale skin and a white shirt, with a softly blurred green and orange background.

Dear Amina, the master has finally let me hold the compass, though only over the charcoal lines he drew on the courtyard floor at dawn. Each ring must carry twelve petals, he says, and each star must sit exactly where the ring before it points. My first attempt wandered like a goat on a hillside, and he rubbed it out with his bare heel without saying a word, which is worse than shouting.

Since then I have measured nothing but angles. The lime plaster goes down wet in the morning, and I press in the ochre and the dark slate chips, one at a time, with a bone tool my father would have called too small for a man's hand. By noon my knuckles are split and the petals have become a field of tiny stars. Hussain walks the length of the court, stops, and taps once with his stick. That means the work is good enough to keep, and I have learned to hear it as praise.

Yesterday he asked me to finish the outer ring alone. When I reached the last petal I found the circle would not close. It fell one segment short, a gap no wider than a grain of rice. I went to him in a fury and he only laughed, low, the way he laughs at the call to prayer. He told me the pattern must always leave one doorway open, or the eye has nowhere to enter.

So I left the gap. Tonight I sat on the step and watched the last light slide across the dark tiles, and the open point caught it and held it. Tell Mother I am eating properly. Tell her the star is still unfinished, and that I am glad of it. Your brother, Idris.
