Three views of a colourful geometric bird tattoo with triangles and dots wrapping the calf, in a neo-traditional style.

Geometric bird tattoo on a calf

Geometric · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised bird perched above a dense cluster of angular geometric shapes, with scattered triangles and dots rising up the leg. The linework is bold black with some dotted and shaded detail, and the fills mix orange, teal, red and grey. The photo shows three angles of the same calf, so the design reads as a continuous sleeve-like piece.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flour sacks had been stacked wrong again, and Marek swore at them in Polish under his breath while the first tins slid into the proofer. Beyond the shop window Bradford was still black. Above the flue a jackdaw sat hunched on the cowl, the same one that came every morning to wait for the crusts.

He had named it Lord Mayor because it looked so pleased with itself. Each dawn it dropped into the yard, picked at the bins, then lifted off in a sudden scatter of grey and black, as if someone had thrown a handful of torn card into the air. Marek liked that part best: the sparks from the ovens, the triangles of light falling across the cobbles through the cracked skylight, the way the whole yard seemed to break apart and rebuild itself before he had finished his tea.

On the Tuesday the bird did not come. Marek waited with the peel in his hand, the bin scraps untouched, until the sky above the car park went from ink to pewter. He found it at last on the yard wall, feet tucked under, a heel of crust beside it, not eating. He did not go near. He tore the end off the loaf he had saved, set it on the wall, and went back in to start the second bake.

When he came out at six with the first trolley, the crust was gone and so was the jackdaw, and a single black feather lay on the flour sack by the door, angled like one of the shards that had flown up from the flue. He tucked it in his apron pocket. The shop smelled of rye and burnt sugar, and for once he did not count the loaves.
