Dear Ada, the surveyor's chain snapped on the third day above Hollin Gate, so I have been counting paces instead, and my count is never the same twice, which I suppose is the trouble with mountains. The pass is nothing like the drawings. The wind comes round the rock in rings, one after another, and every ring throws the snow into petals that open and close before you can fix them on the paper. I have tried to draw one. I drew forty and they were all wrong, though some were wrong in a way I liked.

The shepherd who guides me, Tomas Brake, says the old men at the inn used to carve a wheel of dots into the lintel to keep the weather from walking in. He showed me the stone yesterday. Every dot had been pressed in with a nail by someone patient, and the rings grew lighter toward the middle, as if the centre had to be kept clear for something. I asked what it was for and he only shrugged and said that the centre is where you put what you cannot carry down.

I am sending this with the brass compass, which I no longer trust, and the sheet with the thirty-eighth drawing on it, the only one I think is honest. Look at the outer points, how dark they go. I pressed them hardest. If the pass swallows me, you will know which ring to start from. Do not let the Society tidy it. Keep the dots.
