Mandala tattoo on the stomach
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical black mandala tattoo sits across the lower stomach, with a central motif, layered petal shapes and scalloped edges. The design is built from fine lines and dense dotwork shading, with solid black areas used for contrast. The woman wears a black lace bra and briefs under a cream lace kimono, lying on white bedding, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the frame.

The rosette above platform four had been bolted together from forty-two cast pieces, and by March the lowest petal had split clean across. Nobody at the works could say who drew the original. The pattern book held a pencilled ring and nothing else, so Mrs Ansell, who ran the restoration fund from a cupboard off the ticket hall, gave me a roll of tracing paper and told me to find the centre by eye.

I worked after the last train, when the signal lamps turned green down the line and the concourse smelt of wet coats and oil. The hard part was the dots. Each one was a rivet head, and I had to decide which had been punched by hand and which had worn smooth under a century of pigeons and coal smoke. I counted them with a torch in my teeth, got a hundred and eight, then got a hundred and nine the next night, and gave up on being sure.
Ansell came down on the Thursday with a biscuit tin full of letters. The drawing, she said, had been made by a signalman's daughter who waited under that rosette every evening for her father's shift to end, copying its spokes onto the backs of spare timetables. 'She wanted something that stayed still,' Ansell said, 'while everything else went past.'
I cast the new petal from a wax pattern and fitted it in the small hours, the rivets tapped home one at a time. At first light the rosette took the sun through the roof glass and threw a ring of dark dots across the floor, and the 6.12 pulled out below it without anyone looking up.
