Mandala tattoo on the thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A three-panel collage shows a woman in black underwear on a patterned mat, with a large radial mandala tattoo on her outer thigh and hip. The mandala has fine, symmetrical linework and some shading in black ink, with petal and ring details radiating from the centre. The panels are outdoors in bright daylight, with grass, a wooden fence and palm trees in the background.

Nobody in Crane House could remember when the lift last worked, so when Edie Marr climbed to the fourteenth floor with a bag of rice flour, the children followed her up the stairs to see what she meant to do. She knelt on the landing outside the Okonkwo brothers' flat and began at the centre, pinching a single grain between finger and thumb and setting it down. Then another, and another, until a ring of white ran out from the point like ripples on a pond.

Her mother had done this in a village with no name Edie could find on any map. A pattern made by hand, her mother said, was a door that shut behind you. You made it, you sat with it, and when it was finished you had to let the wind have it. The children asked what was on the other side of the door. Edie said that depended on how carefully you counted the petals.

By dusk the rings had reached the lift doors. Lamplight from the corridor fell through the spokes, and the shadows of the children's hands moved across the petals as they went round. Mr Okonkwo came out in his vest with a mug of tea and stood very still, the way people do in churches. He asked whether she would sweep it up in the morning. Edie said the stairwell would do that for them, one footstep at a time.

The wind came up the stairwell that night, as it always did. In the morning there was nothing on the landing but a faint ring of grit and one small white grain on the top step. Edie picked it up and kept it in her pocket, because it had been the first, and she was not yet ready to let it go.
