Rose vine tattoo down a back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person sits with their back to the camera at a pool edge, wearing a black strappy swimsuit and a hair band. A botanical design of a rose with leaves and stems runs down the centre of the back, with soft grey shading across the petals and foliage. A lighter grey tattoo is partly visible above the waistband of the swimsuit, and the warm, faded photo tone sits over a green pool and stone wall.

The gardeners of Vellmoor keep a rule older than the walls: never cut a rose that climbs toward the sun until it has finished climbing. You learned it at nine, kneeling in the wet clay of the Queen's glasshouse while your grandmother tied a grey-leafed cutting to a hazel stake with strips of old linen. "It will want to climb you," she said. "Let it."

Years later, the Queen's pool garden is where the spring water rises from the limestone and the coping stones stay warm until dusk. You are the one who tends the vine that runs up the great rock beside the fountain. Over the summer it has grown wild, stems looping over the edge of the pool, leaves gone the colour of pewter wherever the shade falls. Each evening you walk its length with the shears in your belt, and each evening you leave them there.
Then a steward arrives with a decree. The Queen wants the vine cut back to the wall before the midsummer feast, because the ambassador from the salt coast complained that the roses smell of wet stone. You tell him the vine has not finished. He tells you the decree has. So you go out at dusk with the shears and find, at the very top of the rock where no ladder has ever reached, a cluster of buds tight as knuckles.
You cut the lowest stem only and leave the rest. By dawn the vine has climbed another hand's width and opened one pale rose above the water. Nobody at court can say afterwards who gave the order that it be left alone, and you have never told them.
