Mandala with leaves and feathers design

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn design of a central mandala with radiating patterns, surrounded by pointed leaves and trailing feathers or stems that extend diagonally across the page. The linework is fine and dense, built from dots, hatching and repeated geometric motifs in dark ink. The design is drawn in a single dark ink on white paper, with a fine liner pen lying at the lower right edge of the frame.

Dear Nan Ruth,

The Bramley trees have gone heavy this August, and Dad has propped every bough with forked ash poles, the way you showed me. I spent the morning on the ladder picking the low fruit while the wasps argued over the windfalls. Under the old medlar I found a jay's feather lying across a ring of fallen leaves, and the leaves had curled into a rough star with points all round, as if someone had pressed them with a stamp.

I took it to the kitchen table and sat it between the sugar bowl and the lamp. Mum said I was being soft. She has been sorting jars for the Harvest stall since Tuesday and has no patience for stars made by weather. But I kept thinking of the pattern at the centre, how the veins looped back on themselves and the little seed-dots pressed into the gaps, as if someone had gone over it with a fine pen, patient as a clock.

On Thursday I went back with a pencil and a sheet of your good paper and copied it, every point and loop, which took most of the afternoon. By the time I finished, the feather had gone brown at the quill, and I had drawn something that looked less like a leaf than a door.

I am sending you the drawing, so you can tell me whether the feather or the star is the one that matters. Come for the pressing in September. The apples are ready, and nobody here draws anything anymore.

Love, Wren
