Black ink mandala design on paper

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical mandala drawn in black ink on pale paper, with a central circle surrounded by layered petals, diamond shapes and scalloped rings. The linework is fine and precise, with stippled dotwork shading on some of the petals and small teardrop motifs around the outer edge. Two fineliner pens rest on the paper at the top right and bottom left corners.

Hold the lamp closer, boy, my eyes have gone the way of everything else out here. Yes, that is the drawing you keep staring at. Mahla Dorin made it with a fine black pen, sitting on the step of the last well before the salt flats, and she made it in one night because the caravan master would not leave until he had a road in his hand.

The road ran to Ouru, which no living man had walked in twenty years. Each petal was a day's march. Each diamond was a cistern, and the small teardrops around the rim marked the places where the sand had swallowed the markers. The dotted shading on the petals, she said, was the wind, and you must learn to read it the way you read a sky before a storm. She ruled every line with a straight edge she had carried from the coast, and when she finished her fingers were black to the knuckle.

The caravan set out at first light with eleven camels and the map folded inside a leather case. For six days it was true. On the seventh they came to a flat place where every ridge looked the same, and the men began to argue. Mahla's son, who had drawn the water carts, held the page up against the sun and pointed to the empty circle in the middle. 'She never filled it,' he said. 'She left it for us.'

They dug in that circle and found the well, cool and full and sweet as the first rain. She left the centre blank on purpose, she told me once, so the next people to read the map would have to find the water themselves. Mind the lamp, boy. You can have the page when you have walked the road.
