Marigold and aster shoulder tattoo
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
Large orange marigold blooms with green leaves and fine dark vines run across the shoulder and down towards the upper arm, with a second cluster of purple asters lower on the back in one view. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and the leaves and stems are outlined in dark linework. The collage shows the design from three angles against a plain grey wall and a pink top.

Old Hester kept the orange flowers in tin buckets behind the coconut shy, and nobody at the Michaelmas fair bought one without first being asked a question. Where do you want to be walking in a year? She put it that way every time, and most people laughed and paid their penny.

A boy called Tobias Crane came through the gate the year the big wheel seized for good. His sister lay in a cot in the far field and would not get up, and the doctor in Stockwell had said the thing to wait for was the first frost. Hester gave him a marigold and told him it could only be carried one way, close to the heart, with the leaves trailing down behind. He asked what it cost. She said he would have to walk the whole fair with it before he knew.
He walked it three times round the dodgems and past the dark tent where the fortune man slept. Asters were opening in the hedgerows by then, violet as bruised plums, and each time he passed a cluster he picked one and tucked it into the folds of his coat. By the third circuit the coat was purple from collar to hem, and the marigold had sent a green vine all the way down to his belt. The lanterns were going out one by one.
He ran the whole way to Stockwell with the flowers bumping against him. When he reached the far field, his sister was sitting up in the cot, calling for toast and wanting to know where her shoes had gone.
