Colour botanical tattoo of pink peonies, small cherry blossoms and green leaves across a woman's shoulder and upper arm.

Pink peonies and blossom on a shoulder and upper arm

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

Large pink peony-style flowers with shaded petals sit at the top of the shoulder, with smaller pink blossoms and green leaves trailing down the upper arm. The linework is bold and the petals are shaded in several tones of pink with soft highlights. The flowers fill most of the frame against a dark background, and a black lace strap is visible at the edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Agnes Pryor had been lifting peony roots at Hollins Farm since the spring frost took the cherries, and by the third week of October her knees had stopped asking permission. The clamp behind the glasshouse held forty roots wrapped in old newspaper, each one labelled in her square capitals: DUCHESSE, SARAH BERNHARDT, and a pale one with no name that she called Tuesday because she had found it on a Tuesday.

The young man from the garden centre in Ashford arrived in a white van with plastic still covering the seats. He wanted the Tuesday. His mother had married in June under a trellis of blossom and had never once seen a peony open out of season, and he had heard that Hollins could make anything flower. Agnes said that was nonsense, but she took his money and wrapped the root herself, tucking wet newspaper round it like a bandage.

That night the first hard frost came down across the valley. Agnes sat in the kitchen with the wireless off, listening to the glasshouse tick as it cooled. Near four she found herself walking out with a torch, not sure why, and the cherry trees along the lane were already shedding pink into the grass, with petals stuck to the windscreen of the van parked at the gate.

The van was gone by morning, its tyre tracks cutting the dew. Agnes went back to the clamp and found one root she had missed, sprouting a red shoot no thicker than a pencil lead. She pulled a fresh label from the tin, wrote TUESDAY on it in capitals, and pushed it into the soil beside the shoot.
