Mason jar with leaves on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A glass Ball Mason jar with a metal lid sits at the centre, with its name and the word MASON lettered on the glass. Dark green leaves rise from the top right, and a ribbon banner curls beneath the jar. The jar is rendered in soft grey shading with highlights and a few light rays around the glass, while the leaves and some banner detail carry the only colour.

There are nineteen left. I counted twice because the first time the kettle went off and I lost my place.

Mrs Penrose from next door came round with a flask of tea and stood in the doorway saying the new flat has no cellar, so what would I do with forty years of plums. I told her I would do what I always did with the plums, which is eat them with custard on a Sunday and give the rest to anyone who knocked. She laughed, but I saw her eyes go to the jar of damsons with the wax gone yellow at the rim, and her hand stayed on the door frame longer than it needed to.
The one I want you to have is at the back, the jar with no label, only a lid pressed down so hard it would not turn. I got it open with a folded tea towel and a butter knife. It was the damson from the autumn the orchard went under the new road, the year you were born. It smelled exactly as it did then, sharp and sweet, like the back step in September. I put a teaspoon on my tongue and cried into the sink like a fool.
Bring the van on Saturday and a stack of newspaper for the glass. Leave your father's opinions about the flat in the car. Love, Nan
