A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Our Dad had the buck drawn on the back window of his pickup before any of us could read, and Wade and I spent the drive up Sable Gap arguing over whose turn it was to hold the ice chest. We were twenty-two and nineteen and had not spoken properly since the funeral in March. The road switched back so many times the tyres squealed on every bend, and Wade kept his eyes on the gravel edge, not on me.

At the top of the pass there's a turn-off where the trees open and you can see three ridges of blue haze. Dad used to stop there. He'd cut the engine and we'd sit with the doors open, listening to nothing. This time Wade got out first and walked to the fence post where someone had nailed a tin sign for a feed store. He stood with his hands in his jacket. I went and stood beside him, close enough that our sleeves touched, which was as close as we'd managed in months.

He said the decal had cracked along the antler. I said I'd seen it. We both knew we weren't talking about the decal. I took the marker from my pocket, the one I'd bought for the deer tags, and drew a short line on the post under the sign, the way Dad used to mark the year on the doorframe of the cabin. Wade looked at it a long time. Then he took the marker off me and added a second line beside mine.

We drove down the far side with the window cracked and the radio off. At the bottom of the hill the signal came back and both our phones buzzed at once, but neither of us looked. Some things need a long road before they can be said.
