The night porter at St Ailred's kept the keys on a ring as heavy as a pocket watch, and every one of them had a tag in his own cramped hand. Mostly he never thought about them. Then in February the padlock on the old chapel door began to rattle at three in the morning, and nobody on the ward would say who was on the other side.

Mrs Vesey, who had mopped the corridors since before the new wing, told him the chapel had been locked by a nurse who married the wrong man and never forgave the lock. "Keys don't open what people shut," she said. "They only tell you where the shutting was done." He did not understand her, and said so, and she wiped the windowsill and went home.

He tried every key on the ring. Forty-one of them, the brass ones gone green, the steel ones bright from use. On the forty-second night he found a small key with a pink thread through its bow, one he had no memory of tagging, and it turned with no sound at all. Inside there was only a chair, a narrow window, and a red ribbon tied to the chair's arm, its end still damp.

He sat down and waited until the rattle stopped. In the morning he hung the key back on the ring and left its tag blank, because a key that opens a door for two people is not his to name.
